Dough
- 1 cup milk (any variety)
- 1/4 cup melted butter or coconut oil (cooled)
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for mixing)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 packet instant yeast (or 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast)
Filling
- 1/4 cup softened butter or melted coconut oil
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (or more as desired)
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
Glaze
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- Warm the Milk: Heat the milk to around 120°F to 130°F to activate the yeast without killing it.
- Make the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the warm milk with melted butter or coconut oil, sugar, sea salt, and instant yeast. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead and Rise: Knead the dough on a floured surface for about five minutes until smooth. Place in a warm spot and let it rise for approximately 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the Filling: Roll out the dough into a rectangle. Spread softened butter over the surface, then evenly sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Form Rolls: Roll the dough tightly into a log shape. Slice into twelve equal pieces and place them cut-side up in a greased baking pan. Let them rise again for 20 minutes.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for about 25 minutes until they are golden brown and cooked through.
- Make the Glaze and Serve: Mix powdered sugar with 2 to 3 tablespoons of milk until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the warm cinnamon rolls before serving for a sweet finish.
Notes
- Use whole milk for richer flavor or any milk alternative for a dairy-free option.
- Allow dough to rise in a warm, draft-free area for best results.
- For a vegan version, use coconut oil and a plant-based milk alternative.
- Brown sugar amount in the filling can be adjusted to your preferred sweetness level.
- Serve rolls warm for optimal softness and flavor.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat gently before serving.
