French Toast Custard
- 8 slices Brioche bread (you can also use Texas Toast)
- 1/2 cup milk
- 4 eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
For Frying
- Butter or cooking oil (for frying)
- Prepare the custard mixture: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until the mixture is smooth and well combined. This custard will flavor and soak into the bread.
- Heat the skillet: Place a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat and add a small amount of butter or cooking oil to coat the bottom evenly, preparing it for frying.
- Dip the bread slices: Take one slice of bread and dip it into the egg custard mixture, coating both sides thoroughly. Let any excess liquid drip back into the bowl to avoid sogginess.
- Cook the bread: Transfer the coated bread slice onto the hot skillet. Fry it for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until each side is golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Repeat for remaining slices: Continue dipping and cooking the rest of the bread slices, adding more butter or oil to the skillet as needed to prevent sticking.
- Serve warm: Once cooked, remove the French toast from the skillet and place on a serving plate. Serve immediately with desired toppings such as maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.
Notes
- Use day-old or slightly stale brioche for best absorption of custard without falling apart.
- Adjust cinnamon and sugar levels to taste for sweetness and spice.
- Keep cooked French toast warm in a low oven while finishing the batch.
- Non-stick pans or well-seasoned skillets are best to prevent sticking.
- Can be customized with different breads like challah or Texas toast depending on preference.
