4.5 from 96 reviews

Classic French Toast made with rich brioche bread soaked in a sweet cinnamon-vanilla custard, then pan-fried to golden perfection. This easy and comforting breakfast treat is perfect for serving warm with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or powdered sugar.

Ingredients

Scale

French Toast Custard

  • 8 slices Brioche bread (you can also use Texas Toast)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

For Frying

  • Butter or cooking oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the custard mixture: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until the mixture is smooth and well combined. This custard will flavor and soak into the bread.
  2. Heat the skillet: Place a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat and add a small amount of butter or cooking oil to coat the bottom evenly, preparing it for frying.
  3. Dip the bread slices: Take one slice of bread and dip it into the egg custard mixture, coating both sides thoroughly. Let any excess liquid drip back into the bowl to avoid sogginess.
  4. Cook the bread: Transfer the coated bread slice onto the hot skillet. Fry it for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until each side is golden brown and slightly crispy.
  5. Repeat for remaining slices: Continue dipping and cooking the rest of the bread slices, adding more butter or oil to the skillet as needed to prevent sticking.
  6. Serve warm: Once cooked, remove the French toast from the skillet and place on a serving plate. Serve immediately with desired toppings such as maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Use day-old or slightly stale brioche for best absorption of custard without falling apart.
  • Adjust cinnamon and sugar levels to taste for sweetness and spice.
  • Keep cooked French toast warm in a low oven while finishing the batch.
  • Non-stick pans or well-seasoned skillets are best to prevent sticking.
  • Can be customized with different breads like challah or Texas toast depending on preference.
