Protein
- 1 lb ground beef or thinly sliced beef strips
Vegetables & Aromatics
- 4 cups green cabbage, shredded
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated or minced
- 2 stalks green onions, sliced
Oils & Sauces
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
Optional Ingredients
- Chili flakes or sriracha for heat
- Rice vinegar or lime juice for brightness
- Cooked rice or noodles for serving
- Heat the oil: Heat 2 tablespoons of olive or vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
- Cook the beef: Add the ground beef or thinly sliced beef strips to the pan. Cook, breaking up ground beef with a spatula, or stirring beef strips until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
- Sauté aromatics: If needed, add a bit more oil to the same pan. Add minced garlic and grated ginger; sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant but not burnt.
- Cook the cabbage: Add the shredded green cabbage to the pan and stir-fry for 4-5 minutes until the cabbage starts to soften but remains crisp.
- Combine beef and cabbage: Return the cooked beef to the pan with the cabbage, stirring to mix the ingredients thoroughly.
- Add seasoning: Pour in 2 tablespoons soy sauce and 1 tablespoon sesame oil. Stir well to evenly coat the beef and cabbage. Adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, and optional chili flakes or sriracha for heat as desired.
- Add brightness: Optionally, add a splash of rice vinegar or lime juice to brighten the flavors, stirring to combine.
- Garnish and serve: Top the stir fry with sliced green onions. Serve hot as is, or with cooked rice or noodles for a complete meal.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef to reduce excessive grease.
- To keep the cabbage crisp, avoid overcooking it.
- For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce.
- Add chili flakes or sriracha to introduce a spicy kick.
- Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days.
